Difference between active water and functional water

  • Functional water is a general umbrella term that is known as “functional water” in English-speaking countries. This includes not only activated water, but also methods that add certain substances to the water in order to achieve a targeted effect on a biological organism. Some also speak of “aquaceutical water”.
  • The Japanese manufacturers' association “Association of Alkaline Ionized Water Apparatus” has been trying since around 1999 to position the term “functional water” for medically used alkaline activated water. In 1999, at the 25th General Assembly of the Japanese Association of Medical Science, a lecture entitled “Electrolytic functional water in medical treatments” took place. In the following years, scientific “Functional Water Symposia” were promoted and a Functional Water Foundation was founded. In 2009, this declared July 11th the day of alkaline active water.
